Our Approach

How We Play

Every Flagship Recreation project is built on three principles that shape how kids, families, and communities experience the outdoors.

Learning-Based Environments

Playgrounds That Teach While Kids Play

When kids talk, read, and explore together, they build skills that last a lifetime. We design environments that make those moments happen naturally.

Research shows a 30-million-word gap exists between children from the wealthiest and poorest families by age 3. Early, engaging environments can close that gap — and the playground is one of the best places to start. We partner with Too Small to Fail and Landscape Structures to bring literacy-focused design to Minnesota communities.

Our learning-based environments are designed for multi-generational interaction — giving caregivers and kids shared experiences that spark conversation and connection before formal schooling begins.

Nature-Based Playgrounds Minnesota

Rooted in the Natural World

Kids who play in nature build resilience, creativity, and a connection to the environment that stays with them for life.

A nature-based playground in Minnesota draws from what's already here — native plants, organic forms, wood and stone, the landscapes kids grow up around. We incorporate local elements into every design not as decoration, but as the core of the play experience itself.

Logs to balance on, hills to roll down, materials that change with the seasons — these environments invite open-ended exploration that structured equipment can't replicate. Kids make choices, take risks, and discover something new every visit.

Inclusive Playground Design

Every Kid Belongs Here

Inclusive playground design isn't a checkbox — it's a commitment to making sure every child in your community can fully participate in play.

True inclusive playground design goes beyond ADA compliance. We look at the full experience: how a child with a mobility device navigates the space, whether a child with sensory needs can find both stimulation and calm, and whether the layout lets kids of all abilities play together rather than alongside each other.

Ground-level events, transfer points, sensory panels, surfacing that works for wheelchairs and bare feet alike — the result is a playground the whole community uses, and one that signals to every family that they're welcome here.
